Karate Stars seek to extend domination in 2016 Karate European Championships

Karate athletes from all over Europe are ready to cause a sensation in the 2016 Senior European Championships to be held in Monpellier.

Karate athletes from all over Europe are ready to cause a sensation in the 2016 Senior European Championships to be held in Monpellier. The French city is hosting the top event of the sport in the continent from May 5-8, four thrilling days to crown the new kings and queens of European Karate.

More than 400 competitors from 46 countries are registered to take the stage in the event to be held in Montpellier Arena. The 51st edition of the top continental championships is expected to continue the spectacular showdown of the sport, as some of the biggest Karate Stars in the continent will try to extend their domination in the competition.

Among the fan favourites set to shine in Montpellier, Azerbaijan’s Rafael Aghayev aims at increasing his outstanding tally of eight gold medals in European Championships, thus acting as one of the main stars of the event. Current runner-up in Male Kumite +84kg, Enes Erkan will try to clinch his third gold medal in the competition, while Damian Quintero hopes to reach the the podium in Male Kata category for the sixth consecutive time.

In female categories, Turkey’s Serap Ozcelik will be one of the names to follow in her quest to her fourth gold medal in Female Kumite -50kg. Spain’s Sandra Sanchez in Female Kata, Austria’s Bettina Plank in Female Kumite -50kg and Alisa Buchinger in Female Kumite -68 kg, and Italy’s Sara Cardin in Female Kumite -55kg will also be among the Karatekas to catch the attention of enthusiasts of the sport.

The prospects of local fans will be centered in home heroes such as current runner-up in Female Kumite -50 Kg Alexandra Recchia, 2015 European champions Lucie Ignace in Female Kumite -61 kg and Emilie Thouy in Female Kumite -55 Kg and current Bronze medallist in Male Kata Vu Duc Minh Dack, among others.

The finals of the 2016 Karate European Championships will be open to a woldwide viewing audience as fans from around the world will be able to watch the action live on TV and WKF’s YouTube channel.

The quest for the medals scheduled for Saturday from 10:00 GMT to 11:30 GMT and from 16:00 GMT to 17:30 GMT, and Sunday from 10:00 GMT to 11:30 GMT will be televised in 35 nations.

Fans without access to the television feed will be able to watch the finals of the tournament live on WKF’s YouTube channel.
